Thinking of an Old Barn in September
That old barn I remember from childhood
Disappeared long ago -- taken down by
Some corporate bulldozer
That's eradicating someone's way of life,
And I'm facing a flamboyant fall once again
With its crisp cool air, football and fashionable
Students, dreaming of apple and pumpkin pies,
As the leaves turn magnificent colors,
While I feel inert and displaced
With my thoughts out of focus,
Splashing in the mud of boredom--
It is back to the same old, the same old
Inertia five years later after
That fateful day in September,
And I don't remember
What happened then any more
Than what happened last night--
All I know is that the barn
Is gone forever
And it's windy and rainy tonight.
