The Old Equation

The old equation's one plus two makes three,
And that is one too many, for in vain
I kept on hoping, it was never me --
Perhaps it's him or her or both -- who knows now --
I took my chances when I went to see you then,
And all our love became a blur somehow,
Leaving inside me nothing but the pain
Of empty promises that were never true --
I never liked the game of one plus two
Or one plus three -- whatever it may be --
One is the only thing that makes me free,
For it's myself alone -- true to me.
